Industry Specific Challenges

Agriculture

Bee and pollinator health sector

In 2021, Canada and the US lost 45.6% of their bee colonies, which accounts for nearly half a billion dollars in direct financial loss for 2021-2022 - United States Department of Agriculture. Developing solutions to bee health and pollination is critical for the agriculture industry.

Synthetic pesticides

Synthetic pesticides cause loss of life and other harm to humans and animals. Synthetic pesticides get absorbed into the soil, causing ecological damage. Developing new pesticide solutions that use plant-based materials is a critical human and animal health issue.

Animal and livestock care

Livestock are in need of ethical and ecologically friendly solutions for specific concerns stemming from the foundational microbial challengesAccording to Nature.com, the poultry sector is suffering from mites that infect chickens and reduce their well-being. There are countless similar issues for each kind of livestock. Some issues have existing products that are becoming less effective due to antibiotic resistance. Innovation is needed to assist with pests, pathogens, and surface disinfection in livestock and animal care.

Food preservation and processing

Additives for food preservation and safety

According to an article published by Lincoln University in the National Library of Medicine, “the estimated cost of food safety incidents for the economy of the United States is around $7 billion per year which comes from notifying consumers, product recall, production losses, processing plant remediation, and paying damages as a result of lawsuits.” Dangerous issues with food safety are caused by E. coli and L. monocytogens, two microbial agents that can cause serious health issues for humans.

In 2008, the Canadian meat-processing company Maple Leaf was devastated by a Listeria outbreak in their cold cuts that caused 22 deaths, according to CBC news. While the financial consequences of this were immense, the loss of human life is immeasurable. New products and processes need to be implemented to make sure this never happens again.

Surface disinfectant

Surface disinfection is a critical component of food processing and preservation. According to a paper in the Journal of Food Protection by the Economic Research Service at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has estimated that Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O157 (0157 STEC) infections cause 73,000 illnesses annually in the United States, resulting in more than 2,000 hospitalizations and 60 deaths. The annual cost of illness due to O157 STEC was $405 million (in 2003 dollars), including $370 million for premature deaths, $30 million for medical care, and $5 million in lost productivity.”

Health care

Antibiotics abuse

According to the World Health Organization, "In 2019, 1.27 million people died as a direct result of antibiotics resistance." This antimicrobial resistance has been developed through the overuse of antibiotics in both humans and animals. As pests and pathogens become resistant to the antibiotics being applied, new superbugs form.

Superbugs can be defined as pathogens that are resistant to any existing known antibiotic. According to OECD, as published in the CNBC news, “Antibiotics resistant infection is tracking to kill 30,000 Americans per year by 2050. Additionally, the financial cost to the 33 developed countries included in the study is estimated to be as high as $3.5 billion a year.”

Skin care

New active ingredients

Active ingredients that are not commonly used for skincare can be applied to achieve antimicrobial results for skincare. There are many challenges in skin care that stem from unwanted bacteria.

Low-carbon, all-natural products

Biotechnology companies like NRCS are able to manufacture products with sustainability in mind. These products are low-carbon and all-natural, reducing waste products for planet Earth.

Companion animals

New active ingredients

New plant-based chemicals can be used to take care of pets in gentler ways than using synthetic chemicals. All-natural products for soaps and shampoos can keep pets feeling clean and moisturized without any negative side effects such as skin reactions or health problems. Some plant-based products are also soothing, and can help calm pets in different scenarios.

Low-carbon, all-natural products

NRCS aims to use responsible methods of manufacturing, producing, and shipping for all products.
